FEEL RESTORED

Enjoy the clear clean water of Lake Malawi

We are so fortunate at Mayoka Village that the waters of Lake Malawi are so clear.

In the Northern region you will find the deepest part of the lake, 750 meters, which is only 5 kilometers from Nkhata Bay. This means that the waters will always be clean no matter what season it is. The lake varies in temperature only a little through out the year with the warmest being 26 degrees and coolest 21, so what ever the season it is always pleasant to swim.

snorkelling

All along the shore right in front of Mayoka you will see a huge variety of colourful tropical fish.

Lake Malawi is famous for its Cichlid fish, which are very popular for aquariums and with biologists

Cichlids are the fastest evolving fish in the world which means that the lake has more than 1500 different species, all different in colour, pattern and behaviour, there is even one fish that only swims upside down to feed on the bottom of rocks. Cichlids are also interesting because the mothers care for their young by keeping them in their mouth when threatened, a really fun thing to see when snorkelling if you are lucky.

We have plenty of snorkels and masks for you to borrow and can direct you to good sites and tunnels to swim through if you’re brave enough.

If you want to tour the area easily we have double and single kayaks which are easy to handle.

EXPLORE NKHATA BAY

There are plenty of ways to experience the relaxed atmosphere and local culture of Nkhata Bay.

We are happy to connect you with local guides who offer guided walks and hikes through the surrounding villages, where you can experience everyday village life, share lunch with a local family, or climb Bungulu Hill for stunning 360-degree views of the area. Nkhata Bay is known for being a safe, friendly, and welcoming place to spend time.

In town, you can watch a local netball or football match, or play a game of volleyball at Chikale Beach. The local markets are especially lively on Sundays and Mondays, when the town fills with fresh fruits and vegetables, fish from the lake and second-hand clothes. You can also visit local jewellery and craft shops or have something custom-made by a tailor.

If you are looking for more adventure, we highly recommend scuba diving with Aqua Africa, located just across the bay.

Here at Mayoka, our very own craftsman, Massa, can teach you how to create your own carvings and curios.

For those seeking relaxation, we can also arrange massages with local masseuses.

EXPLORE BEYOND NKHATA BAY

For guests wanting to explore further afield, there are several beautiful day trips and experiences beyond Nkhata Bay.

Visit the “Hidden Waterfall”, located only 30 minutes from Mayoka by car, or explore the surrounding tea and rubber plantations.

You can also take a trip to Mzuzu, located around 45 minutes from Mayoka. As the third-largest city in Malawi, Mzuzu offers local cafés, markets, shops, and a different perspective on everyday life in Malawi.
