At Mayoka Village we have been a part of the Nkhata Bay community for more than ten years now and we are very grateful to be able to call it home. We do our best to give back what we can to our community and environment. We have built Mayoka Village using locally sustainable materials and eco-friendly methods. We have compost toilets to protect the lake water from contamination and cook on natural gas to avoid using firewood or charcoal. We recycle all our shower / bath water to be used to water the plants in the garden.
When Mayoka Village started in 1999 there was twenty one of us, of which eighteen of us are still here working in various jobs at Mayoka, since then our number has expanded to fifty two, all of us having great fun being part of such a beautiful place.
Just a few of the Mayoka family.
We are proud to support traditional Malawian culture and talent at Mayoka Village. When ever possible we have traditional dancing, local school drama groups, local traditional bands and musicians, church choirs and any talented individual with something to offer doing performances in the bar. Often the performance is in aid of raising money for a good cause such as school fees or a new church roof which we are happy to lend a hand in.
Mayoka is personally involved in a number of community projects. Among other things we are currently sponsoring 18 young people to complete their secondary education, if you would like to know more about this please click on the school support button on the left of the page.
We are also currently building a Sunday school / nursery /library at our local church which will provide a much needed facility for the local community. The building will be used for a pre school nursery during the week in the mornings, a place with electricity and a library for students to use for studying during the evenings and a Sunday school for the church. We hope to raise funds for computers in the future to offer more educational facilities for students.
Kathryn and Gary Wiggill are also involved in building a primary school to offer a better quality of education to the children of Nkhata Bay. To find out more visit the official web-site at www.mwawiprimary.org
